This is a calavera, the decorated skull at the heart of Dia de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday that honors and celebrates loved ones who have passed. Far from being a symbol of fear or darkness, the sugar skull is joyful and full of life. It represents remembrance, not loss. It says that the people we love are never really gone as long as we keep celebrating them, keep telling their stories, keep setting a place for them at the table once a year. It is one of the most beautiful reframings of death in any culture in the world.
For the ones who honor their ancestors. For anyone who has lost someone and found comfort in turning grief into celebration. For the people drawn to Mexican folk art and its incredible richness, color, and meaning. For anyone who simply finds the calavera design as beautiful as it is significant. This charm carries real weight and real heart.
The design is cut directly into a smooth gold disc in the classic skull silhouette, with playful cutout details standing in for the traditional sugar skull decoration. Heart shaped eye sockets, a heart shaped nose, a five point star and swirling brow details above, and a row of cutout teeth across the bottom complete the face. The negative space cutout style gives it a clean, almost lacework quality rather than anything morbid or heavy. It is festive, detailed, and unmistakably what it is meant to be.
Medium size (see photo next to dime for scale) 18k gold filled Cutout calavera design with heart, star, and swirl detailing Charm only, no chain included (pairs beautifully with any of our chains in the charm bar)
A note on gold filled jewelry from me, your jewelry designer: Gold filled is a different process than gold plating. Instead of a thin layer of gold flashed onto a base metal, gold filled pieces have a much thicker layer of real gold that is bonded to the base under heat and pressure. That makes it far more durable and far more resistant to tarnishing, fading, and everyday wear than plated gold. It can generally handle light water exposure, like washing your hands or getting caught in the rain, without an issue. That said, I would still recommend taking it off before swimming, showering for long periods, or heavy sweating, since prolonged moisture exposure can shorten the life of any gold finish over time.
