Instead of a thin layer of gold flashed onto a base metal, gold filled pieces have a much thicker layer of real gold that is bonded to the base under heat and pressure. That makes it far more durable and far more resistant to tarnishing, fading, and everyday wear than plated gold. It can generally handle light water exposure, like washing your hands or getting caught in the rain, without an issue. That said, I would still recommend taking it off before swimming, showering for long periods, or heavy sweating, since prolonged moisture exposure can shorten the life of any gold finish over time.
